I got home from work and went out back to check my petunias for worms. And, of course, they were crawling all over the plants, devouring the blooms. I picked off all that I could see and then deadheaded them. Went into the kitchen to wash my hands and heard an ungodly buzzing! There was a HUGE black bumble bee buzzing around in the garden window in the kitchen! I went to the garage to get some insect killer, came back in and was dive-bombed by the damn bee! He flew back into the garden window and I started spraying. I used so much spray that I’m going to have to completely clean everything that was sitting on the window shelves as well as thoroughly clean the windows. The spray was running down the glass. And still the damn bee kept buzzing and flying!
Finally the spray started to get to him and he stopped buzzing and started climbing on the curtains. Now the curtains will need washing as well since they got soaked with insecticide. He finally had enough and fell over on his back on one of the window shelves. He laid there and kept sticking out his stinger and retracting it, sticking it out and retracting it. Damn! I would not want to get stung by that one!
I got a small pair of pliers and picked him up, cutting off his head. I guess bees are one of the perils of having lots of flowers in the yard, but this sucker makes me want to rethink putting in any more blooming plants!
Did some investigating online and discovered the damn worms that are destroying my petunias (as well as one of my geraniums) are called tobacco budworms. There are a couple of remedies available, both of which I happened to already have in the garage. So, I’ll be mixing up some spray (the stuff I have is a concentrate) and start in on them. Unfortunately, the one that works on the petunias won’t work on the geraniums, but the geranium stuff is already in a spray form. Look out worms, your days are numbered!
