Just got back from the vet. Murphy has an enlarged heart, an enlarged liver and a sunken trachea. All this was visible from the x-rays, before any blood work was done. The best the vet feels they can do is to treat the symptoms. He won’t get better, in fact his health will probably continue to decline. She believes he is experiencing some amount of pain right now and that’s why he whimpers after a coughing spell.
She gave him an injection for pain and sent us home with orders to treat Murphy royally for the next few days. We have an appointment on Thursday at 5 pm when I will see him off to join Darwin and Puto.
Meanwhile, I’ll be cooking him some fabulous meals for the next two evenings and pampering him lots. The vet said she wished she could have done this for a dog that she lost.

Cathy, I am sorry to hear this..Murphy is one of my favorite dogs! Such an awesome personality!
I cooked cheeseburgers on the grill last night and grilled hot dogs tonight. Murphy couldn’t believe he was getting all this fabulous food! Am having great difficulty knowing this is his last night at home with me.
Puto spent his last night laying on the floor in the bathroom, something he had never done. I just found Murphy laying on the floor in the bathroom, something he also has never done.
So Murphy is making my decision a lot easier to deal with. It is currently 2:45 am and I just put him outside to stay for the rest of the night. He has awakened me every 20-30 min since midnight with a coughing spell or needing to go outside to pee after drinking inordinate amounts of water. Don’t know how I’m going to be able to go to work after only about 4 hrs of uninterrupted sleep…
