The vet called this morning to give me the results of Loki’s blood work that I had done on Thursday. Loki has kidney failure, with only about 15% of his kidney function remaining. The vet wanted to do all kinds of procedures including hospitalizing him for ~3 days to inject him with fluids and meds. Then she wants me to do under-the-skin injections at home and put him on a diet of some kind of prescription canned food specifically for kidney problems.
Cost of the procedure will be $400-$500. Cost of monthly maintenance will be $125. She anticipates all this will give him a few more months to live depending on how well he does with the treatments…and how well I do with administering them.
I discussed all this with Patrick, Sally and Kelly and have decided not to treat him. I know this means his kidneys will give out and he will die soon…just like Puto. I just don’t see the point in spending all that money when it will only give him a few more months. He’s still probably going to die yet this year no matter what I do or do not do.
I’m becoming numb to the deaths of my pets.
